Did we just get five degrees hotter? I think we did!
HEX held its very first LinkedIn Roast for 2023. Welcoming a legendary panel of roasters to add fuel to the flame! These included Rose Callaghan, Jeanette Cheah, Tarzon Budhathoki, Warwick Donaldson and Vinisha Rathod.
â
These folks see thousands of profiles, have endless stories about career success (and failures), and have tens of thousands of LinkedIn followers. They have a combined: 17k+ LinkedIn followers, 70+ volunteer experiences, 30+ work experiences and 190+ skills (allegedlyâŚ).
A great night full of networking, career advice and laughs, but why did we decide to hold this event?
Donât blend in with the crowd and get your skills and talents ignored - everyone can stand out and make a lasting impression. In today's job market, having a strong personal brand on LinkedIn is essential and can make or break your chances of landing your dream job (the real reason is because we donât want any more âSaaS Startup Ninjasâ).Â
So, here are a few key takeaways from the evening:
- Be authentic: Your LinkedIn profile is a representation of you, so it's important to be authentic and genuine. Use your âAboutâ section on your profile to tell YOUR story and what makes you special - donât have something generic that can be copy and pasted to other peoplesâ profile
- Showcase your work experience: Include one line about the organisation and 3 points about what YOU did in this role. Donât get caught in the trap of trying to include everything you did in the role - only include the most relevant information. Also include media, links, documents and skills to showcase the work you did under each experience.
- Tell your story: If you are passionate about a cause, SHOW it rather than making an empty statement that âyou want to change the worldâ. Explain why you are passionate about it in your âAbout Sectionâ, include relevant experiences in the âWork Experiencesâ and âVolunteer Experiencesâ and follow organisations that align with your values.
- Be active: Your personal brand wonât build itself! There are a plethora of actions you can take to grow your online presence on LinkedIn - react and comment on peoplesâ posts sharing your opinion or even start sharing your own posts about experiences you have or lessons you have learned!Â
- And final point from Warwick, there is only one correct way to spell startup, no space and no hyphen. Or you can spell it wrong just to annoy him!Â
